Biography
What do you get when you mix politics, culture and talk radio? For 33 years in the nation's #1 radio market, it's been Mark Riley, known for his charismatic approach to political controversy as well as his adept skill for remembering newsworthy details and statistics.
For three decades, listeners in the tri-state New York area dedicated their respect for his in-depth and unbiased journalism as a broadcaster on WLIB at 1190AM. Over the years he has also been commended by a plethora of celebrities and politicians, as well as receiving honors from numerous civic organizations.
In 2004, Riley was invited to share his wealth of radio experience to Air America Radio, where he first co-hosted the early morning drive program "Morning Sedition," later evolving to become “The Mark Riley Show.”
“Experience has to be earned” says Riley, “and it is only after time that you learn how to manage smoothly all the many complex situations that can arise during a live radio broadcast.”
Riley’s first on-air opportunity came as host of the public affairs program Urban Notebook, which skyrocketed in popularity throughout the New York tri-state area. In 1986, Riley moved to the prime time morning slot broadcasting live from the World Famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem.
Since that time, Riley has worked his way up through a spectrum of roles to include writer, editor, managing editor, executive editor, program director.
During his tenure as WLIB program director (1992-1996), Riley identified the diversity of the WLIB audience and set to establish more balance between the African American and Caribbean dimensions of the station's programming. Riley also pioneered the station's efforts to enhance listener awareness in the political arena, airing full coverage of all Democratic and Republican conventions since 1990, as well as coverage of both Democratic Inaugurals in Haiti.
